Hello all,

Welcome to the final issue of Modern Surface for 2021. What a year it has been! In many ways, this year (and last year) have not quite gone as planned but I think our persistence in the face of the hardships of this year should be commended. The resilience and adaptability displayed by many people are valuable skills. Let’s go into the new year ready to meet whatever challenges should arise. Reflecting on the past year with Surface Ventures, I’d like to thank all of you for tuning into our webinars and workshops and now, our newsletter. From Team Surface Ventures, we wish you all a great Christmas and a happy New Year. See you all in 2022.

Research highlights: Highly cited

Molecular dynamics simulations are often employed in tribological and surfaceengineering studies to explore fundamental interactions that are difficult to determine experimentally. Seiler et al. have used molecular dynamics as a complementary method in their investigation of a scalable graphene production method, Effect of friction on oxidative graphite intercalation and high-quality graphene formation.

Electric vehicles are on their way to dominating the market but there are many technological challenges yet to overcome. Tesla is the current market leader in the EV market but they’ve inspired competition in the rest of the market and it will certainly be interesting to see how things develop in the coming years. Productivity resources: From the web

For some (myself included), managing the urge to procrastinate is difficult. I used to find myself engaging in tasks that had to be done but would put off more pressing tasks as it seemed stressful to tackle them. In this TED talk, Tim Urban explores the mind of a master procrastinator. The reason for procrastinating are numerous as detailed in this article from the Washington Post but by establishing some better habits (eating the frog for example), you can reclaim your work agenda and get back on track.

From our Partner: Upcoming events

Register now for Micro Materials next User Meeting on Thursday, January 27th at 14:30 pm IST (9 am GMT). With a focus on high-temperature testing, including testing under vacuum conditions, invited speakers include:

A video demonstration of the NanoTest Xtreme system installed at IGCAR will also be given by Dr Das of IGCAR. This workshop is timed to suit attendees based in Asia but is open to all users of the NanoTest and other nanoindenter instruments.
