Hello all,

For your reading pleasure; the fourth edition of Modern Surface: Fretting, mining metals and good typesetting. I’ve found it’s beneficial in research to take a step back to gain a better perspective. We’re often grappling with complex concepts and finding how all the pieces fit together is challenging. That’s what makes this a rewarding career though, there’s great satisfaction in finding out new things. As we all continue to learn and develop our skills, we can better meet the challenges ahead.

Research highlights: Highly cited

As the length scales in tribology become smaller, modelling approaches gain importance for their ability to provide insight on the fundamentals of wear and friction. As the relative displacement in fretting is on the micron scale, these approaches are becoming more popular. Finite element analysis of fretting wear under variable coefficient of friction and different contact regimes by Yue and Wahab presents the following highlights:

Fretting is, without doubt, a complex topic that requires the understanding of many other research areas beyond its fundamental tribology as can be seen in the topics diagram below. Explore more on the topic of fretting here.

Interesting infographics

It’s very easy to take all the materials around us for granted especially the metals used in our daily lives. It’s staggering the amount that is mined, refined and used to create new items every year. This infographic from Elements and Visual Capitalist shows the metals mined in 2019 alone! Explore more information from this visual here.
