Hello all,

I hope you enjoy our third edition of Modern Surface: DLC, decision making and the importance of sleep. It’s shaping up to be a busy semester with our upcoming events and workshops. I’m particularly looking forward to delivering our next workshop on PVD and CVD Coating Technologies (more details below). I’m reminded of how important time management and good scheduling is to keep on top of everything. Sometimes saying no to incoming offers is the best approach to keep yourself committed to the tasks you need to focus on. I’ll certainly be employing this to keep myself focused in the upcoming weeks.

Diamond-like carbon coatings are used for their excellent tribological properties across many industries from automotive to cutting tools. This family of coatings can be easily tailored to a number of environments with several variants and the capability to dope the materials with additional elements. Visualising research

Impact is a key factor when choosing where to publish your research. The higher the impact, the more likely you are to be cited and your research seen by a wide audience. There’s a certain undeniable prestige that comes with getting published in a high impact factor journal also. The figure below is an impact chart for diamond-like carbon publications from 1999-2019. The x-axis represents the top 20 entries ranked from left to right giving a measure of impact. The y-axis normalises the rank by the number of publications produced giving a measure of productivity. How to use advanced nano-/micro-scale testing to deliver improved wear resistance of DLC coatings – Friday October 22nd 9am – 10am BST. Register for this event.Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings can combine high hardness with low friction but they are often deposited with high levels of intrinsic stress and display low adhesion strength resulting in poor performance in demanding applications. A key challenge is to develop advanced DLC coatings capable of withstanding more demanding applications in the automotive, cutting tools, MEMS and oil and gas sectors. In highly loaded mechanical contact applications a combination of load support and resistance to impact fatigue is often required. Longer lifetime of coated components may be achieved by designing the coating system to combine these properties rather than by solely aiming to maximise coating hardness as this may be accompanied by brittle fracture and higher wear!In this presentation, we show how data from a range of nanomechanical and tribological test techniques in the multifunctional NanoTest Vantage (nanoindentation, nano- and micro-scratch, nano- and micro-wear, nano- and micro-impact) can be used together, and with supporting simulation, to improve the design of DLC coating architectures for enhanced wear resistance in specific applications [1-3].
